A 10-foot U-Haul truck went through the ice on Echo Lake early Saturday, after being driven more than 400 yards across the lake.
According to a Facebook post by the Southwest Harbor Fire Department, at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday they were called to help the Mount Desert Fire Department rescue a truck and person who went through the ice.
The driver reportedly drove the truck across the ice starting at Ike’s Point. After ending up in the water, the driver was able to get out of the truck and call 911 for help. Firefighters walked across the ice and carried the “wet and cold person” back to shore.
The Maine Warden Service was working to remove the truck, according to the post. A spokesperson said he would provide more information when it becomes available.
