A snowmobile that went through the ice of Lake Wassookeag in Dexter on Tuesday with a father and son aboard has been retrieved.
Early Thursday morning, members of the Dexter Fire Department and a crew from the water district and diver Greg Canders were able to get the vehicle out of the water.
“There were a few hiccups along the way but the sled was back on the right side of the ice at 11:57,” the fire department said in a Facebook post. “Greg certainly knows his stuff when it comes to recovering things from the cold waters, that’s for sure.”
The father and son were heading across the middle of the lake to go ice fishing at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when their snowmobile suddenly went through the ice.
After spending roughly 10 minutes in the water, shouting for help to no avail, the son was able to give his father enough of a boost to get him onto the ice, at which point the father helped the son out of the water.
