The actor Angus MacInnes, best known for his role in the Star Wars films, has died.

MacInnes died on 23 December at the age of 77, his family announced.

He was best known for his performances as Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander, or Gold Leader, in the Star Wars franchise.

He featured in two films in the series – Episode IV: A New Hope and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The cause of his death was not disclosed but he died “peacefully, surrounded by his family and love”, a statement from his family said.

His career spanned decades.

His work outside the Star Wars franchise included roles as Sgt Whitman in 2004’s Hellboy, Fergie in 1985’s Witness, as a Maersk Alabama crew member in 2013’s Captain Phillips, and General Tom Barnes in 2007’s Flight of Fury.

But fans of the Star Wars films “held a special place in his heart”, his family said.

“He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga,” they said.

“He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community,” their statement added.

MacInnes played a former Imperial pilot who defected when ordered to bomb rebel-friendly areas of his home planet.

The character dies in the first assault on the Death Star, the moon-sized weapon used to destroy planets, in A New Hope.

Born in Canada in 1947, MacInnes’s family said he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

The family tribute added: “Angus was more than an actor – he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humour into the lives of everyone who knew him.

“He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow actors but also by his fans around the world – his family thank you all.”
