A man has been arrested following a standoff in Glenburn on Monday.
Christopher Cunningham, 37, of Corinth was taken into custody on Monday evening after an hourslong standoff with county sheriffs and state police on Monday afternoon, according to a post on the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
Cunningham allegedly had warrants out for his arrest after police responded to a domestic violence report last Friday. When officials arrived at the Corinth residence, Cunningham reportedly fired a number of shots into the air and then fled the scene.
An investigation led officers to believe that Cunningham left the country after the Friday encounter, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. By Monday, officials reportedly learned that Cunningham had reentered the country and was at a Glenburn residence.
A Maine Forest Service helicopter arrived at the Route 222 residence to aid with the ongoing investigation into Cunningham’s whereabouts on Monday afternoon.
While sheriff’s deputies were at the house, a person reportedly exited the back of the house and was confronted by officials. The person told officials that Cunningham was inside the residence.
A second person later emerged from the house, and told deputies that Cunningham was inside the home when apprehended by officials.
After obtaining a search warrant, the Maine State Police tactical team was called in to assist as sheriff’s deputies worked to create a perimeter around the premises.
During this time, traffic was diverted from the area to ensure public safety.
After several hours, Cunningham reportedly exited the house, and was taken into police custody.
Cunningham faces a domestic violence reckless conduct charge, possessing a firearm as a prohibited person and a Class B reckless conduct charge.
He was transported to the Penobscot County Jail. It was not immediately apparent Monday evening when Cunningham will be granted a court date.
