A Windham man turned himself in to state officials on Saturday, confessing to shooting a domestic dog on a hiking trail in North Yarmouth one day earlier.
The Maine Warden Service charged Troy A. Hall, 51, with one count of shooting a domestic animal and more charges could be coming, spokesperson Mark Latti said.
The incident happened at about 11 a.m. Friday as three people were walking their dogs on a marked trail in the Knights Pond Preserve, according to the Warden Service.
One of their dogs was shot about 20 feet ahead of them.
The Warden Service said the man, later identified as Hall, was wearing a blaze orange vest, a blaze orange hat and camouflage pants. The owners of the dog had a brief encounter with him, but he quickly fled the scene.
The Warden Service had offered a $2,000 reward for information on the then-unknown shooter.
Hall turned himself in at the Windham Police Department at about 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Latti said.
