UMaine men’s, women’s basketball teams playing non-conference games on Sunday

The University of Maine women’s and men’s basketball teams return to action on Sunday in non-conference action against teams they played last season.

The women will entertain the University of Pennsylvania at the Memorial Gym in Orono at 11:30 a.m. while the men will travel to Providence to take on Brown University with a 2 p.m. tipoff.

The UMaine men followed their 96-62 loss to No. 7 Duke University on Monday with a 98-47 home win over the Division III University of Maine Fort Kent on Wednesday.

The UMaine women opened with a 65-51 victory over La Salle University on Monday but haven’t played since.

In its midweek win over UMFK, nine Black Bears scored at least seven points and four reached double figures.

Quion Burns led the way with 16 points and he also had 10 rebounds. A.J. Lopez had 15 points and four rebounds, Kellen Tynes produced 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots and Keelan Steele had 12 points and six rebounds.

Ridvan Tutic had nine points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 13 minutes of play.

Tarik Islamovic’s 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists led UMFK and Maksim Vukcevic had nine points.

UMaine beat Brown 60-49 in the Memorial Gym a year ago and Brown lost its opener to Siena 72-71. Brown is coming off a 13-18 season including an 8-6 record in the Ivy League.

The UMaine women received double-doubles from senior guard Paula Gallego and graduate student guard-forward Caroline Bornemann and 18 points from junior guard Sarah Talon to beat LaSalle.

Gallego had a career-high 21 points to go with 10 rebounds and three assists and Bornemann produced 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Pennsylvania was 15-13 a year ago including a 72-69 triumph over UMaine in Philadelphia. The Quakers went 7-7 in Ivy League play.

Penn opened with a 64-52 victory over Merrimack.
