QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Maine. It’s kind of like Canada.”

— Hazel Domain of Bangor in a TikTok video encouraging people who are considering moving to Canada after Tuesday’s election to come to Maine instead.

TODAY’S TOP STORIES

Donald Trump’s return to the White House will affect Maine. Here are three things to watch, including big energy plans that have gone from potentially game-changing to dead on arrival.

Kamala Harris conceded the presidential election to Donald Trump. “Folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now, I get it,” the vice president and Democratic presidential nominee told a crowd of supporters at Howard University. You can see how your community voted in the presidential election using this map.

Angus King won a third term that will make him Maine’s oldest-ever U.S. senator. The 80-year-old independent who caucuses with Democrats faced challenges from a Republican, a Democrat and an independent.

Jared Golden narrowly fended off Austin Theriault in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. The result was only settled after military and overseas ballots — the last ones to be counted — came in heavily in favor of Golden. You can see how your community voted in the 2nd District race using this map.

Democrats held the Legislature, but recounts are coming in the House. The result is a relief for Gov. Janet Mills going into her final two years in office. Mills and her party will have eight straight years in control of the State House.

Maine voters rejected an effort to change the state flag back to the 1901 pine tree design but passed four other referendums, including $30 million in borrowing for trails, a $10 million historic preservation bond, a $25 million bond for research and development, and a campaign finance reform measure that may never become law.

A Bangor health center halted its clean syringe and STD testing services. The announcement from Bangor Health Equity Alliance comes amid an ongoing rise in HIV cases in Penobscot County.

THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND

On Friday, the Cross Insurance Center hosts the Hairball, a night of ‘80s hair metal with costumes encouraged, set for 8 p.m. in the ballroom. There’s also the first of several holiday craft fairs set for Saturday and Sunday at the Bangor Mall, featuring hundreds of vendors selling Maine-made wares all day. In Orono, Ten Bucks Theatre Co. presents its annual 24-Hour Play Festival, in which participants have 24 hours to write, rehearse and produce a brand new play; performances are set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Minsky Recital Hall at the University of Maine. And on Sunday in Waterville, the legendary Elvis Costello performs at 8 p.m. at the Waterville Opera House.

FROM THE OPINION PAGES

“We, as individuals and as a nation, must try to find ways to discuss our differences without demeaning and devaluing one another.”

Editorial: ‘It’s time to unite,’ not around hatred or revenge, but around support and understanding

LIFE IN MAINE

A Maine novelist’s new crime saga aims to elevate its Franco-American characters. Unlike Irish, Italian and Jewish Americans, the French-Canadian immigrant experience has rarely garnered any serious literary exploration, especially in English.

This hunting adventure was even better than trick or treating. Unlike the year before, the Turner family moose hunt was a happy one, thanks to generous Jackman residents.

Here’s how to keep your game meat from spoiling. The clock starts the moment you pull the trigger.
