A former Portland ed tech who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for sexually abusing a 6-year-old died in a New Jersey prison on Monday.
According to the Kennebec Journal, Benjamin Conroy, 35, died Monday at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey. His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Conroy had served just two years of his sentence. In August of 2022, Conroy pleaded guilty to sexually exploiting a child at Ocean Avenue Elementary School in Portland. He had admitted that he sexually abused the child, who had autism, and shared the photos of the victim on a dating app. He also reportedly bragged about it.
He was sentenced in May 2023. If Conroy had served his entire 22 year sentence, he would have been subject to 15 years of supervised release.
