HAMPDEN, Maine — Camden Hills High School freshman phenom Molly Williams came into Tuesday night’s Class A North game against Hampden Academy leading the Windjammers in goals with 23.

She left with 28.

Striker Williams figured in eight of the 10 goals, scoring five and assisting on three others as Rockport-based Camden Hills improved to 13-0 with a 10-1 victory over the Broncos.

The game was called after 60 of the 80 minutes due to the mercy rule (at least an 8-goal lead).

Senior two-time All Northern Maine Regional Class A midfielder Britta Denny scored her 21st and 22nd goals of the season and added four assists. Senior All-Northern Class A Regional back Rose Tohanczyn, junior forward Isaabelle DeBrosky and sophomore forward Thea Laukka scored the oher goals.

Lucille Ward and Lea Zwecker had assists and senior goalie Madeline Tohanczyn made two saves on nine shot attempts.

It was the eighth time this season that Camden Hills had scored at least eight goals in a game.

Tireless and dynamic sophomore midfielder Grace Marquis scored for the 5-5-1 Broncos with Kiera Gabric picking up the assist. Busy junior goalkeeper Lauryn Smart finished with 13 saves on 31 shot attempts.

The Broncos have gone winless in their last four games (0-3-1).

“It was very exciting. It was a lot of fun out there,” said Williams. “I was set up very nicely by my team.”

“Molly’s soccer sense, her field sense is off the charts for someone her age,” said Camden Hills coach Meredith Messer. “And she’s playing with Britta (Denny) and Leahh (Snyder) who also have such a great high level of understanding.

“The way they are playing off each other is really special. You don’t see that a lot,” said Messer.

Denny and Snyder are captains. Snyder is also a midfielder.

“We did a really good job connecting. We focused on playing at our level and working on individual stuff as well as team stuff,” said Denny, who will play at the University of Maine in fall.

The Windjammers wasted little time taking a foothold on the game, scoring three times in the first 8:20 of the game.

Tohanczyn opened the scoring just 2:48 into the game when she was left unmarked in the penalty area and headed home Williams’ well-placed corner kick from seven yards out.

“We look to score from headers every game,” said Williams.

Thirty-seconds later, Williams slipped a perfect through ball into the path of Denny and her powerful shot glanced in off the leg of Smart.

DeBrosky made it 3-0 off the rebound of a Denny shot that deflected off the near post over to the left side of the penalty area. She calmly tucked it into the near side corner.

Ten minutes later, another excellent corner kick by Williams found an unattended Laukka, who headed it home.

Williams scored the final two goals of the first half off assists from Ward and Denny.

Williams made it 7-0 early in the second half when she converted a Denny pass.

The highly-skilled Marquis got rewarded for her work moments later when she took a Gabric pass at the top of the penalty area and rifled a shot into the far corner past Tohanczyn, who had made two good diving stops off Marquis earlier in the game.

Denny then added her second of the game before Willams scored the final two goals.

“They had a couple of players up front who really have some good speed so it was a great test for our centerbacks, Harper Coburn and Lucy Ward, and I thought they did a nice job for the majority of the game,” said Messier.

“Our girls played hard,” said HA coach Dale Overlock. “We didn’t connect like we wanted to but I was happy with the effort.”

Camden Hills will conclude their regular season by hosting Lewiston on Friday at 3:30 while Hampden Academy will entertain Class B North rival Hermon on Thursday at 6.
