A Hancock County sheriff’s deputy shot a man in Stonington on Saturday after a confrontation in which the man allegedly drew a gun.
Police received a call at about 3:50 p.m. from a woman on Weed Field Road, who said her adult son was threatening to burn down their house.
Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy John Stanley went to the residence and found the son, Erik-Thor Himpler, 35, walking on the road. The deputy ordered Himpler to stop, but he refused and raised a gun that he pulled from his waistband, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputy Stanley shot Himpler, then with other officers administered aid until paramedics arrived. Himpler was brought to Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital then transferred to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputy Stanley will be placed on administrative leave while the Office of the Attorney General investigates his use of deadly force, as is standard practice.
