October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Partners for Peace has several events planned for Penobscot and Piscataquis counties.
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue in Maine, with roughly half of homicides being domestic violence related. Each October, Partners for Peace lifts up the voices of survivors and remembers those taken too soon. There are several ways to get involved this year.
Community members can get involved by showing up to one of the several events listed below, donating, hosting a donation drive, or sharing event information.
The following events are open to the public:
University of Maine March Against Domestic Violence will take place on Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. This public annual event is organized by the UMaine Business Corps. Meet at the Fogler Library steps and march into the field house where there will be speakers, resources, and a remembrance ceremony for those we’ve lost to domestic violence over the past year. Partners for Peace is hosting a Family Movie Day at Center Theatre on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. This is a free family friendly showing of “Hotel Transylvania”. There will be prizes for the best Halloween costumes and fun kids’ activities before the showing. This event is proudly sponsored by Pleasant River Lumber Co.
Partners for Peace is asking lawmakers to attend an information session to learn more about advocating for survivor-constituents at the State House. The first info. session will take place on Oct. 21 at the Bangor Public Library Community Room from 4-5:30 p.m. The second info. session will take place on Oct. 28 at the Partners for Peace Dover-Foxcroft office from 4:00-5:30 p.m. RSVP required.
Partners for Peace is teaming up with the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence for online film screenings of “A Better Man” by Attiya Khan and Lawrence Jackman. The first will take place on Oct. 22 from 2–4 p.m. and the second on Oct. 23 from 5:30–7:30 p.m.
