A police chase out of Milford that wound through Holden ended in the death of the suspect on Wednesday evening.
The suspect was identified in Eddington by the Penobscot Sheriff’s Office around 6:30 p.m., after receiving a report that the person had violated a personal protection order. The person under protection had left the area and traveled to a friend’s house, but the suspect followed her, officials said in a Friday evening Facebook post.
Later that evening, while the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office attempted to locate and arrest the male subject, officials learned that he had fled from the Brewer Police Department during an attempted traffic stop.
Officials were able to determine that the man admitted he had not stopped for police, made life-threatening comments and had a firearm with him. Numerous agencies in the Bangor area stayed on alert for the man throughout the evening.
At around 10:50 p.m., the suspect was located at a Milford business by the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, but immediately fled the scene. He then led officers on a police chase that ended on Copeland Hill in Holden.
The man was seen slowing down, while officers noticed that he attempted to shoot himself. The chase came to an end when the suspect’s vehicle left the road, ran into a fence and came to rest near a home.
After the area was secured, officers approached the vehicle and found the man severely injured. Emergency medical care was attempted, and the man was transported to a local hospital.
He later died at the hospital, due to what is initially believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Details on whether police discharged their guns were not immediately made clear. Further information about the investigation was not released on Friday evening.
