Residents of many Maine municipalities have seen their property tax bills increase dramatically over the past few years.
While the actual tax rates may remain unchanged, the assessed values of homes have, in some cases, increased by up to 60 percent since 2019, which can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to the yearly bill. Many towns have undertaken tax assessment reevaluations, as many homes now sell for well over their town assessment value, and the cost of providing municipal services has also increased with inflation.
Maine ranks number one in the country for its property tax burden — percentage of personal income that is paid as tax — according to finance website WalletHub, with nearly 4.9 percent going each year towards property taxes.
