Former University of Maine wide receiver-running back Zavier Scott has earned a spot on the practice squad for the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings.
Scott, an undrafted free agent, spent training camp with the Indianapolis Colts and rushed for 74
yards on 14 carries in three exhibition games. He also caught two passes for 10 yards.
He had a game-high 55 yards in 11 carries, including a 6-yard touchdown run, in a 21-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
He made it to the last cut with the Colts before being released.
Scott had been on the Colts’ practice squad the previous year after suffering a torn meniscus.
“I’m grateful God put me in Indianapolis to help me grow into a better man. I’m grateful for all the relationships and experiences I had there. I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Scott posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I’m excited to join Minnesota in this journey. Some amazing things ahead! Glory to God forever!”
The 6-foot-1, 219-pound Scott transferred to UMaine from the University of Connecticut.
During his final season at UMaine in 2022, he racked up 898 all-purpose yards and was chosen to the All-Coastal Athletic Association third team.
He led the Black Bears in receptions with 42 and receiving yards with 434. He was also second on the team in rushing with 371 yards on 39 carries.
His 9.5 yards per carry led the CAA.
Scott also returned three kickoffs for 93 yards.
During the fall campaign in 2021, he was third on the team in rushing with 119 yards on 35 attempts. He also caught 11 passes for 114 yards and completed his only pass attempt for 7 yards.
During the spring season, he appeared in two of four games with six catches for 102 yards.
He appeared in 14 games at UConn during the 2018 and ’19 seasons and had 33 catches for 228 yards and carried the ball 34 times for 210 yards.
