HOULTON, Maine — A Fort Fairfield man charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of his infant son was sent to jail Monday after his bail bond was terminated.

Stanley Hazell, 24, appeared in Aroostook County Superior Court for what was scheduled as a bail revocation hearing, but he was no longer eligible for bail, according to Superior Court Justice Stephen Nelson.

The hearing was scheduled after Assistant Attorney General Leann Robbin filed a motion to have Hazell’s bail revoked. There was no discussion during the brief proceeding about why Robbin sought to revoke his bail. Because Hazell’s bond was terminated, the revocation hearing was postponed and not rescheduled.

Under Hazell’s bail conditions of release, he was ordered by the court to put up $15,000 cash or a $50,000 surety bond secured by property of that value. The bond was terminated by the bondholder, and without the cash he cannot remain free, according to Maine law. Nelson ordered Hazell be taken to Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.

Seven-month old Jackson Hazell’s April 8, 2022 death was ruled a homicide by the Maine State Medical Examiner.

A lengthy investigation resulted in the arrest of Hazell, in Caribou on Nov. 13, 2023 according to Maine State Police.

Nelson said in court during Hazell’s February bail hearing that he was charged on allegations that he recklessly and with criminal mischief caused the death of Jackson Hazell.

If convicted, Hazell could face up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

No trial date has been set for Hazell.
