SOUTH PORTLAND — Since its inception in 1980, the City of South Portland’s Art in the Park event has become a summer staple and a favorite of both local artists and attendees alike. It is Maine’s largest outdoor art show, and admission is free so that all can enjoy the beautiful original art and photography of over 160 artists.

This year’s edition is set for picturesque Mill Creek Park on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event also features a food court, live music, and a tent for kids where this year’s “Beach Vacation” theme will feature activities and crafts along with “A Whale’s Tale” presentation from the Children’s Museum which will begin at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

For over 15 years, Norway Savings Bank has been proud to count itself as a supporter and sponsor.

“The organizers actively work to create, promote, and host an event that not only spotlights the amazing talent of so many local artists, but also brings the community together for a day of celebrating that talent and each other,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings. “The bank appreciates these efforts and always loves to help when it can assist programs that increase the value of the cultural and community life in our footprint and beyond.”

In addition, Art in the Park awards prizes ranging from Best in Show to Merit Awards and even a $1,000 scholarship to a student graduating from South Portland High School who plans to pursue art studies in college. A student exhibit at the event also showcases art created by students in South Portland schools. In lieu of individual awards for elementary and middle school students, Art in the Park gives a $50 Class Award to each art teacher to supplement class supplies.

“We’re so grateful for the support of all of our sponsors, including Norway Savings Bank, which has displayed its belief in the importance of Art in the Park for many years,” said Karl Coughlin, director of Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront for South Portland. “In addition to the event itself, proceeds have been used to improve the park over the years, including the gazebo, the fountain, holiday lighting, and the redesign of the park. Art in the Park has grown into such an important and revered gathering each year, and we’re thrilled with the continued success.”
