I was very concerned to read that the town of Northeast Harbor is being sued by a few summer residents over the plan to build affordable housing. As a summer resident myself (Cranberry Isles), I feel justified in my concern.
I am very aware that summer residents pay a substantial amount in taxes, support local businesses and are generous in charitable organizations. They contribute greatly to the economy of the town. However, there are many people who would like to live, work and raise their families here, but simply cannot afford to. Many have to pay a large part of their paycheck commuting from areas away from town. Surely, the town fathers know what’s best for the health and welfare of their people.
Is it really necessary to go through a long drawn out (and expensive) lawsuit just to assure that these few residents won’t have to endure any possible inconvenience the buildings might incur? These few might well be able to afford these legal proceedings, I don’t think the town can.
The town should be able to provide affordable housing for its permanent residents. We as summer people should always remember we are summer residents. Decisions made concerning the year-round occupants should be made by the town without interference.
