Northeast Hearing & Speech, a Portland-based non-profit hearing and speech center celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, is excited to welcome new Executive Director Cameron Garrett. Garrett fills the role previously held by Laurie Mack, who retired in June after 34 years with the organization.

Garret has more than 15 years of experience leading strategic initiatives in the non-profit and public sectors. She most recently served as the executive director of Islands Community Medical Services in Vinalhaven, where she played a critical role in leading the strategic restructuring of the organization, implementing rigorous quality improvement initiatives and electronic health records systems, and establishing transparent governance practices.

Previously, she worked at Martin’s Point Health Care and Eastern Maine Healthcare System in addition to many years of experience providing strategic, financial, operational, and program leadership across multi-faceted, multi-sited development programs in the U.m. and nine African countries. Garrett is a resident of Yarmouth.

“I’m impressed by Northeast Hearing & Speech’s dedication to providing a complete range of services to help people of all ages hear, speak, and communicate,” noted Garrett. “The organization’s commitment to community outreach, impacting thousands of individuals in need every year, resonates with my own values, professional aspirations, and passion for contributing to the well-being of individuals and families in Maine.”

Garrett fills the role of executive director upon the retirement of Mack, who joined Northeast Hearing & Speech in 1990. In addition to her role as executive director and her clinical practice, during her time at Northeast Hearing & Speech Mack served as a UNE LEND faculty member, a Hanen Certified Trainer for Early Childhood Educators, and an active member of Portland Connect Ed’s Starting Strong and the Westbrook Children’s Project providing hundreds of parents and preschool teachers with information about how to support early language and literacy with young children. Mack is looking forward to working part time as a consultant in early care and education settings.

“For the past 34 years, I have had the pleasure of working for this amazing organization first as a clinician and then in leadership positions. I continue to be inspired by the dedication of our team in supporting people with speech-language and hearing challenges. NHS is truly a special place and I am happy that they have found their next leader. Cam has a diverse and impressive background, and everyone is excited to have her join the team,” said Mack.

Northeast Hearing & Speech is a Portland-based non-profit hearing and speech center that has been serving the communities of Southern Maine since 1924. Clinicians offer a complete range of audiology and speech-language pathology services to help people of all ages hear, speak, and communicate.
