A driver who was suspected to be operating under the influence of alcohol before a fatal crash in Gray on Sunday has been charged with manslaughter, along with other charges.
Jean Nshimiyimana, 43, of South Portland was arrested and charged with manslaughter and operating under the influence after another driver was killed in the Sunday crash.
The crash was reported just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday on Portland Road at Sugar Maple Road. Cumberland County Sheriff Chief Deputy Brian Pellerin said Nshimiyimana was driving a 2022 Jeep Gladiator when before crashing into a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban traveling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Suburban, who is not being identified at this time, died at the scene of the crash. Two minors were injured in the crash and transported to Maine Medical Center. Details on whether they had been discharged from the hospital were not available Thursday morning, and a call to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office was not immediately returned.
Nshimiyimana has been charged with manslaughter, operating under the influence causing a death, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and aggravated criminal mischief following a court arraignment.
After his arraignment, Nshimiyimana posted bail and was released from the Cumberland County Jail. He is restricted from using or possessing alcohol or driving a vehicle without a legal license.
