There will be no harness racing in Bangor on Wednesday because of the heat wave.
The heat index is expected to reach 107 degrees Fahrenheit, which made canceling the day’s races at Bass Park “the only prudent action,” according to Michael Hopkins, the live racing manager at the track.
“Our utmost responsibility is to ensure the safety of the horses, horsemen and women, patrons, and our employees,” Hopkins said in a statement.
The Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association are currently in discussion to determine when and where to hold Wednesday’s scheduled races.
This heat wave, running from Tuesday to Thursday, is expected to be the most severe since 2020, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will rise into the 80s and 90s, with oppressive humidity making it feel even hotter.
