Thirteen guinea pigs have been abandoned down a lane in Cardiff, prompting a charity appeal.
The guinea pigs are receiving vet care and are being treated for mites, while the RSPCA conducts its enquiries.
They were found in a small grey basket and have now been placed into the care of Merthyr Tydfil Veterinary Clinic.
The person who found them took the guinea pigs to a safe place, before the RSPCA were contacted.
The RSPCA’s animal rescue officer Lauren Perry said the rodents were found in the Connaught Road area of Cardiff on 26 May.
When they were found, it was noted they had skin infections.
“These guinea pigs are all very different colours and all seem to be doing well, although they are being treated for mites, there was also concern they may have potential ring worms,” Ms Perry said.

“It is very sad that they have been abandoned – we know people are struggling at the moment with the cost of living crisis – but leaving animals alone like this isn’t the answer.”

Dominika Jagoda, who works for the charity as a small animals welfare expert said “people don’t always correctly sex guinea pigs”.
“A pair can quickly spiral into double figures and beyond,” she added.
“Owners need to make sure the general welfare needs of guinea pigs are catered for, especially making sure they have the right environment to live in and that they have plenty of space to exercise and explore as well as having plenty of toys to help prevent boredom.”
A found poster has been placed in the area and the RSPCA are asking anyone who may have information to get in touch.
