Julia Gagnon, a Cumberland resident, will try to sing her way to the top five of “American Idol” Sunday night after advancing on Monday.
Gagnon wowed judges Perry, Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan in Monday’s episode with her powerful, soulful rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz.”
The 22-year-old University of Southern Maine student has gotten closer to winning the long-running singing competition show than any other contestant from the state.
Gagnon, who shared her story of being adopted from Guatemala in her first episode, has united Mainers all across the state in support of her. Gov. Janet Mills congratulated her April 22 on the social media platform X after Gagnon made the top 12.
Gagnon will compete against the other remaining six singers beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday. Two contestants will be eliminated during the episode, and the top five will then perform on May 12. The three-hour “American Idol” finale is scheduled for May 19.
