Senior righthanders Luke Johnson and Sam Daniels scattered eight hits and the University of Maryland Baltimore County scored four runs in the fourth inning en route to a 7-1 victory over the University of Maine in an America East contest in Baltimore, MD on Thursday afternoon.
UMBC improved to 19-19 overall and 9-7 in the conference while UMaine fell to 10-30 and 6-9, respectively. The teams play again Friday and Saturday.
Johnson allowed the eight hits and the run over 6 ⅔ innings with two strikeouts and three walks. He improved to 3-4.
Daniels pitched the final 2 ⅓ innings and didn’t allow a hit. He struck out two and didn’t walk anyone.
The Retrievers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Luke Trythall’s sacrifice fly.
They broke it open in the fourth.
Danny Wyatt reached on a fielder’s choice and Derek Paris doubled him home.
Kyle Eddington singled and Dawson Baracani singled home Paris.
UMaine starter and losing pitcher Jason Krieger uncorked a wild pitch to deliver the third run of the inning.
Following a walk, Krieger was replaced by Marshall Smaracko and the final run of the inning crossed the plate on a passed ball.
Baracani paced the UMBC attack with three singles and two runs-batted in.
Eddington had two base hits.
Matthew Best tripled for the winners and Paris and Matt Ryan each doubled.
Connor Goodman singled twice for the Black Bears. Jake Marquez tripled and Colin Plante doubled and Jeremiah Jenkins drove in the only run with a single in the seventh.
Freshman Krieger took the loss and is now 1-4. He allowed six hits and five runs, four earned, over his 3 ⅔ innings. He struck out two and walked four.
Smaracko got the final out of the fourth before Owen Wheeler and Blaine Cockburn each tossed two innings in relief. Wheeler allowed two runs and a hit with two strikeouts and two walks and Cockburn allowed two hits and no runs with three strikeouts and two walks.
