This section of the BDN aims to help readers understand Maine’s housing crisis, the volatile real estate market and the public policy behind them. Read more Housing coverage here.

This 5,122-square-foot estate on Long Lake looks like an Antebellum house out of the southern U.S.

The four-bedroom, five-bathroom home in Harrison sits on nearly 2.5 acres with 800 feet of frontage on Long Lake, located just north of Sebago Lake.

Aside from a private dock, the property includes a footbridge over a small inlet in the lake, as well as about 20 feet beyond the other end of the bridge, according to Matt DiBiase of Landing Real Estate, the listing agent for the property.

“That much water frontage is extremely hard to find, but the house itself is extraordinary,” DiBiase said.

DiBiase has received many calls about the property since it hit the market in late April with an asking price of just under $5.2 million. That’s significantly more than the price of an average home in Harrison, which has crept up to nearly $413,000 as of April, according to Zillow.

Built in 2001, the home sits on the tip of the lake, which means the home’s many large windows offer views down the length of the lake, DiBiase said.

The estate is filled with luxury finishes and custom brickwork, and the spacious kitchen includes high-end appliances. DiBiase said the formal living room is the most captivating part of the home, with a towering fireplace, cathedral ceilings, picture windows and a catwalk on the second floor that overlooks the space.

“It’s the first thing you see when you come in,” DiBiase said. “It’s amazing and tastefully done.”

The master suite is also particularly luxurious, as it offers a private balcony overlooking the water, a double-sided fireplace connecting the bedroom and large bathroom, and walk-in closet.

The sellers, who have owned the house for more than 20 years, use it as a summer getaway but it can be lived in year-round.

The property has an attached three-car garage, as well as another detached three-car garage with a two-bedroom in-law apartment above it, offering additional space for storage and guests, DiBiase said.

“With all the bedrooms and space it’s designed for a big family that loves to entertain,” DiBiase said. “It’s perfect for someone that, like the current owners, lives out of state but wants to enjoy it during the summer.”
