Shawn Hatosy addressed whether he is returning to The Pitt for season 3 after the show went through several surprising cast exits and shakeups.
“We start in a couple weeks and I haven’t even read the episode. It hasn’t been sent, but I know that I’m going back,” Hatosy, 50, exclusively told Us Weekly at the MPTF NextGen Summer Party on Sunday, May 31, confirming his involvement in the hit show’s next season.
The actor — who stars as Abbot — joked about the fan reaction if his character didn’t return.
“Come on, Abbot will be back,” he reassured Us. “That place wouldn’t function that night without Abbot.”
Which ‘The Pitt’ Stars Are — and Aren’t — Returning After Cast Exits?
The Pitt premiered on HBO Max in January 2025 and follows a group of employees at a fictional Pittsburgh hospital’s ER working a single 15-hour shift. Along with Abbot, the team includes Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), Dana (Katherine LaNasa), Dr. Mohan (Supriya Ganesh), Dr. McKay (Fiona Dourif), Dr. King (Taylor Dearden), Dr. Santos (Isa Briones), Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell) and Javadi (Shabana Azeez).

The Pitt previously earned some strong feedback from fans following Tracy Ifeachor‘s exit after season 1. The response got even louder when news broke in March that Ganesh’s character would be written out of the show after season 2.
While exits are often the name of the game on a medical show, concerns about The Pitt saying goodbye to beloved characters has continued into season 3. Hatosy, however, was curious to see how The Pitt would move forward after season 2 ended on such an emotional note.

Looking ahead, Hatosy also weighed in on the constant requests for a night shift spinoff.
What ‘The Pitt’ Cast Has Said About the Show’s Numerous Exits
“I think it’s a no-brainer. Obviously, I don’t want to dilute or take anything away from what’s happening on The Pitt, but you know that there are wonderful characters,” he told Us. “There’s a whole other universe in the night. There’s a tone shift.”
Hatosy continued: “I think down the road it’s a no-brainer. There’s also a crew and a set that’s sitting there while we’re off that could be utilized. So — in my mind — I think it makes a lot of sense, of course.”
Following his scene-stealing performance on The Pitt, Hatosy has been booked and busy with other opportunities, including a stint on Fire Country. The Pitt’s Jalen Thomas Brooks even pitched Us a cameo from Hatosy on Off Campus.
“Absolutely. I haven’t watched the show yet, but I love Jalen,” Hatosy told Us about the chance he could appear in the hit Prime Video show. “Mateo is a hardcore, ride or die member of the night shift. So I would do anything to support a fellow night shifter.”
