At a moment when global tensions are rising and cyber threats continue to evolve, safeguarding America’s election infrastructure should remain a steady priority.
Maine is fortunate to have experienced and professional local election officials who consistently deliver secure and accessible elections. But even the most capable administrators depend on modern equipment, updated cybersecurity protections, and adequate staffing. In a decentralized system like ours, resilience requires coordination and sustained federal partnership.
Foreign actors have demonstrated a willingness to target election systems, through cyber activity and information operations. That reality underscores a simple point: election security is national security. Protecting voter registration systems, strengthening ballot security, and ensuring reliable, auditable voting technology are practical steps that reinforce public confidence and deter interference.
As chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Susan Collins has previously supported and championed meaningful investments in election security. That leadership has helped states maintain and modernize critical infrastructure. As Congress begins considering Fiscal Year 2027 funding and future appropriations, continued attention to this issue will be important.
Maintaining secure elections preserves trust in the democratic process and ensures every vote is counted accurately and efficiently. That responsibility should never waver.
