The two engaged in a lengthy back-and-forth about celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that is reactive to gluten. Some listeners were offended by Hoffman’s dismissal of gluten intolerance.

What Is Celiac Disease?
Per the Mayo Clinic, celiac disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system reacts to gluten, a “protein found in foods containing wheat, barley or rye.” For people with celiac disease, eating foods with gluten triggers a reaction in the small intestines.
The most common symptoms of celiac disease are “diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating or anemia” but more serious health complications can arise. Anyone with celiac disease is encouraged to follow a gluten-free diet.
What Did Robby Hoffman and Alex Cooper Say About Celiac Disease?
Cooper brought up “gluten intolerance” during a discussion of hot button topics with Hoffman on the May 20, 2026, episode of “Call Her Daddy.” Hoffman first asked whether gluten intolerance is a genuine health issue before going further.
“I want to see the outbreak,” she told Cooper. “I want to pick up a roll. We’re having rolls tonight. Just a bag of rolls. I don’t care if it’s the Hawaiian roll, whatever, I don’t care if it’s a dinner roll. Butter it up. Is it Hitch? It better look like Hitch.”
Hoffman was referencing Will Smith’s 2005 comedy Hitch, where his character’s face swells due to an allergic reaction to shellfish.
“It better look like Will Smith in Hitch,” she reiterated. “If it’s not Will Smith blowing up in Hitch, I don’t know.”
Cooper chimed in, saying that gluten intolerance “does feel kinda recent.”
“It’s very recent,” Hoffman agreed. “It’s just, I gotta see. Everybody is suddenly celiac. … Remember when we were kids, everybody was allergic to peanuts? I never hear that anymore because it’s not cool anymore.”
She went on, “Less and less people are allergic to peanuts. People used to f***ing pass out and need an epipen. You had to stab ‘em! I grew up ready to stab a bitch who was freaking out!”
“But no one was allergic to gluten in our classes,” Cooper claimed, with Hoffman agreeing, “No. I don’t see the peanut allergy too much [now].”
Hoffman eventually clarified that she was “only joking,” before questioning whether there is a difference between an “intolerance” and an “allergy.”
“Is it an allergy or is it a preference?” Hoffman asked.

Cooper and Hoffman faced significant backlash for their skepticism about gluten intolerance, with some finding their jokes insensitive.
“I really liked robby hoffman but imma need her to educate herself on celiac disease before she says she wants to rub bread on people with ‘gluten allergy’ and further the stigma against us by saying this is a ‘recent’ disease as if that isn’t because of more testing being done,” an X user vented.
