The brother of late South African figure skater Kira Meyer has spoken out following her death at age 12 after an electric scooter accident.
“As some of you may know, we had to say goodbye to Kira. If anything, the past week has shown us how much she was loved and we all say thank you for all your prayers and support,” Keagan Meyer wrote via Facebook on Monday, May 18.
Keagan attached a link to a fundraising campaign made in his late sister’s honor, which he explained would “help pay for the medical payments which is the unfortunate reality we have to face now.” (The fundraiser has amassed more than $4,500 at the time of publication.)
“Any support is greatly appreciated even if it’s just sharing the link. Any additional information is on the site as well. Don’t hesitate to send me a message if you would like more information in regards to the fund raiser,” Keagan wrote.

He continued, “Rest in Peace my beautiful sister we will see you again and we will get past these hard times with you watching over us and smiling!.”
Kira’s mother, Angelique Meyer, shared that her daughter had been admitted to the ICU in a coma following an electric scooter accident on Mother’s Day, May 10.
“She suffered a brain injury and was taken to Milpark Hospital by helicopter,” Angelique wrote at the time. “The brain scan did not bring good news, but we know God is in control. Please pray with us, the next 48 hours are very important for recovery and that the swelling will go down.”
Three days later, Angelique shared that Kira was no longer sedated but her condition remained the same. “Her vitals look normal, heart is still beating, but she has not responded at all,” she added.

On Saturday, May 16, Angelique shared that Kira died.
“I have been sitting with my phone on my lap for the last 30 minutes to get the words,” Angelique wrote at the time. “Kira was declared brain dead by 3 doctors yesterday. Her lungs also gave in. Although she is still connected to machines, she is already safe at Jesus’ feet.”
She continued, “This is an unnatural death as the drs explained and tests and processes must be followed before she is declared dead whole. At this point, we as her parents are still trying to make sense of everything and we are not yet ready for the post with ‘rest in peace’ or ‘angel wings.’ We as her parents will speak the words when the time is right, when her little body is no longer connected to machines and when we have a time of death.”
