Things could have gotten romantic for Sandy and Danny in real life.
A new book about the late Olivia Newton-John claims the actress nearly had a real-life romance with John Travolta, who played her love interest in the 1978 musical movie Grease.
The book, titled A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John, is set to be released on Thursday, May 14. However, People published an excerpt, which claims that Newton-John had a conversation about Travolta, 72, more than two decades after Grease.
“A musician, who had been married to a Scientologist, joined Olivia’s band and became friends with her,” the excerpt reads. The band member alleged that Newton-John and Travolta “were very, very close,” alluding to a romance by adding, “Almost that close.”
The unnamed band member claimed that he had a conversation with Newton-John about Travolta when they worked together. Newton-John allegedly asked “a personal question” about the band member’s marriage to a Scientologist.
“Obviously, you know John is a Scientologist,” Newton-John allegedly said. “I know the Church of Scientology really reveres him as a very valuable follower.”

According to the excerpt, she added, “If I had married John, would he have expected me to become a Scientologist?”
The band member apparently told Newton-John “it would have been encouraged” but not “mandatory.”
Travolta has been a notable member of the Church of Scientology since he joined the organization at 21 years old in 1975.

People’s book excerpt also noted a 2018 interview with Didi Conn, who starred as Frenchie in Grease alongside Newton-John and Travolta. She alleged at the time that there was real chemistry between the two actors, revealing an alternate ending to the film in which Sandy and Danny had a “juicy” kiss.
“They weren’t acting at that moment,” Conn claimed at the time. “It was real, it really was.”
Travolta wed Kelly Preston in 1991. They were married until her death in 2020 at age 57 from breast cancer.
Newton-John was married to Matt Lattanzi from 1984 to 1995. She wed John Easterling in 2008, and they were together until her death at age 73 in 2022 following a battle with breast cancer.
Travolta memorialized Newton-John with an Instagram post after her death.
“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much,” he wrote at the time. “We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”
