The Grey’s Anatomy season 22 finale pulled off several cast exits, a proposal, several possible breakups and more surprise twists.
During the Thursday, May 7, episode of the hit ABC series, Owen (Kevin McKidd) was involved in a bridge collapse that made him and Teddy (Kim Raver) reconsider their future together. Owen survived — and saved several patients — before reuniting with his ex-wife, who wanted to reconcile. They decided to both travel to Paris so Teddy could take her dream job. The episode’s final scene showed the couple saying goodbye to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Elsewhere in the episode, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) reexamined her romance with Nick (Scott Speedman) when he nearly died. She made an offhand comment about Nick being her husband but ultimately proposed the idea of them getting married once his health improved.
Simone (Alexis Floyd), meanwhile, didn’t tell Wes (Trevor Jackson) that she hooked up with Lucas (Niko Terho). Things got even more complicated when Wes wanted to get more serious — and Lucas wanted them to give their connection another try.

Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) had her own set of problems when Toni (Jennifer Landon) seemed to get back together with her ex. Toni revealed she actually chose Amelia, who had already hooked up with Cass (Sophia Bush).
In happier news, Jules (Adelaide Kane) and Winston (Anthony Hill) made it clear that they were committed to a future with each other — and Ben (Jason George) caught them sneaking out of a room together.
The finale also showed Jo (Camilla Luddington) questioning her career while Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) was officially fired.
Despite the major lows, the finale ended on a largely positive note compared to the previous season, which terrified fans with a hospital explosion.
Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy faced plenty of cast shake-ups as Amelia previously chose to take a sabbatical after the shocking death of her colleague Monica (Natalie Morales). It was subsequently reported that Scorsone’s break would last until the end of 2025 in an attempt to cut costs.
Which ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Stars Are — And Aren’t — Returning After Cast Exits?
The show previously reduced the minimum guarantees for its veteran cast members to 14 out of its 18 episodes per season. While some of Grey’s Anatomy‘s consistent stars were missing for four episodes, Scorsone’s absence was doubled.
Showrunner Meg Marinis previously hinted that not every character would be safe as the story continued.
“But even in the last two seasons with what you saw this year, we had to reduce the cast a little bit [because of industry-wide budget cuts], and everybody has very passionate feelings about their favorite characters,” Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2025. “But if we can get the writers upset then we know we’re doing it right. It’s not as satisfying a story if people aren’t upset when someone leaves. It’s supposed to make people upset and sad, so I’m sure there’ll be some arguments. But I’ve been persuaded before to change my mind on things.”
