I believe we need Janet Mills’s voice now. She has a storied list of accomplishments: increased healthcare availability to Mainers by expanding Medicaid; increased the “rainy day fund” to $1 billion; achieved 55% state funding for education; made community college free; is the state’s first woman governor and first governor to earn more than 50% of the vote since 1998.

I think she would have made an excellent U.S. senator for the State of Maine, yet she saw that it was time to pass the torch and suspended her race. I believe we need her to endorse Graham Platner for Senate and vow to support his candidacy to beat Sen. Susan Collins this fall.

I believe her voice will strengthen his campaign and bring Democrats together for this all-important push to unseat a senator who has supported an unnecessary war in Iran, supported the effective ending of absentee ballots and other election changes despite her own constituency’s rejection of these ideas, voted to confirm a cabinet member who has decimated public health and funding of science research, supported a tax cut for multimillionaires, and allowed many Mainers to lose subsidies to help pay for healthcare.

Democrats need to work together to elect Platner to the Senate. I believe Janet Mills can seal her legacy as a champion and fighter for Maine by adding her support to his candidacy.
