A Brewer man allegedly confessed to a hit-and-run crash that sent a car spinning off the highway and into the woods.
David Harris, 48, is charged in Penobscot County with one misdemeanor count each of leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury, driving to endanger and failure to report an accident after a crash on Sunday on Interstate 395.
The 20-year-old woman driving the car that was hit had a head and an arm injury, according to a probable cause affidavit from Maine State Police. Police have said her injuries are not life threatening.
Harris allegedly left the scene of the crash. He then called dispatch later that day and admitted to police he caused the crash and left on foot, the court records said. Harris told police his girlfriend picked him up.
The crash happened on the I-395 Main Street overpass in Bangor, according to police. A black Ford Mustang, which police later determined was driven by Harris, was driving erratically and it hit the Volkswagen it was trying to pass.
The Volkswagen was hit by the Mustang from behind, causing the driver to spin out, police said. Her car went through the grass, rolled over once, hit the guardrail, rolled over the rail and went down the embankment into the woods, according to court records.
An anonymous tipster submitted a photo of Harris walking on Main Street and another person witnessed the crash, according to court records.
The district attorney is not seeking jail time for Harris, so he is not eligible for a court-appointed lawyer, according to court records.
Harris was granted a $250 bail, which he has posted and was released from the Penobscot County Jail on Thursday morning. He is scheduled for a status conference on July 6.
