Urban Pizza in Bangor is closing for the second time in less than two years.
The pizza restaurant at 329 Main St. next to Dunkin’ will close at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday according to its Facebook page. Urban Pizza reopened in December 2025 after a year-long closure.
This is the second time the shop has closed in recent years. The Bangor location first opened in December 2023, seven years after its owner announced plans to do so, and closed one year later.
Urban Pizza had an extensive menu that included New York-, South Shore- and Detroit-style pizza, as well as hoagies, burgers, beer, wine and cocktails, according to Facebook.
A change in Maine’s liquor license law this year is the driving force behind the shop closing, according to the post.
Under the new law, business groups have a limited number of liquor licenses they can hold at one time. The group is seemingly over the amount of licenses allotted under the new law, forcing them to close Urban Pizza to allow the other locations to hold licenses, according to the post.
The group who owns Urban Pizza also owns multiple Blaze locations, including ones in Bangor, Bar Harbor and Blue Hill.
Matt Haskell has previously said he owns the restaurant, but Wednesday’s post describes the ownership as a group.
Urban Pizza did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Although the business could operate without selling beer, wine and liquor, the sales were needed for the shop to gain traction in the community, according to the post.
If the law had not changed, the pizza shop would have stayed open, according to the post.
Although the Bangor location is closing, Urban Pizza will still exist in Maine.
Another location will be opening in Bar Harbor in a building behind Blaze that has a liquor license, according to the post.
