A Maine man was burned in a flash fire then drove himself to find help Monday evening.
A 31-year-old man was burning trash in a fire pit around 7:37 p.m., on Maple Road in Atkinson, an unincorporated township in Piscataquis County, according to Maine fire marshal’s office spokesperson Shannon Moss.
The man threw gas on the fire to get it going and caused a flash fire, which then caught him on fire, Moss said. He was burned and drove himself at least 8 miles to Lagrange before requesting an ambulance, she said.
He was then flown by helicopter to a hospital in Bangor, Moss said.
The fire marshal’s office documented the injury but the Maine Forest Service is investigating the fire, she said. The investigation is ongoing, the service said.
