THOMASTON — Watts Hall Community Arts has been selected by the Maine Humanities Council to host a Maine Speaks program, bringing historian Libby Bischof to Thomaston for a free public talk titled “A Visual History of Maine Through Postcards” on Monday, May 4 at 6 p.m. at Watts Hall, 174 Main St.
In this engaging presentation, Dr. Bischof will explore how the concept of “Maine,” and particularly the local region, was shaped through visual culture. Drawing on postcard imagery from the late nineteenth to mid 20th centuries, she will examine how these images helped define place, identity and memory. Dr. Bischof is also the creator of the Maine Postcard Project, which promotes the history of and renewed interest in postcards as a form of communication.
A program of the Maine Humanities Council, Maine Speaks supports individuals and organizations all over Maine who want to bring people in their community together to learn from and talk with a gifted speaker who will share their expertise and lived experience in engaging ways.
