This is in response to a column published in the April 18/19 Bangor Daily News.
The author, who was a Democratic leader in state government, essentially claims that Democrats must nominate someone who’s won a statewide race to beat the opposition. I see no evidence of this. It unnecessarily narrows the field of eligible candidates.
The opinion column labels Graham Platner as a “stranger” with no record. All voters can attend one of his many open town halls and get to know him. If we only elect “seasoned” politicians, I think we will never be able to improve our government with fresh ideas.
The second point is that we need someone with experience. While political experience is a plus, it’s not always positive. Politicians learn who holds the power, who holds the purse. They often make friends with lobbyists and big corporate donors. Self preservation tactics don’t always serve voters.
Third, the column questions Platner’s values. This is a tired argument; as if young men (and young women) never can outgrow the mistaken ideas of youth. Just the fact that Platner seems to have grown his thinking is proof to me that he’s admittedly a work in progress.
I believe progress is what we need. To move away from politics that favor corporations, from backroom deals, from party politics as usual. I don’t want the DNC to choose my U.S. senator. The stakes are too high.
I want a candidate who is accountable to the electorate and represents the people of Maine.
