An Ellsworth man who was indicted by a grand jury last week after he led a multi-agency police chase this winter was arrested again Wednesday morning for domestic assault and eluding an officer.
Skylar Hughes, 29, was arrested in Ellsworth on Tuesday for five alleged offenses: domestic violence assault, obstructing the report of a crime, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, driving to endanger and eluding an officer.
Each of the offenses are misdemeanors except for eluding an officer, which is a Class C felony. However, because Hughes is already facing a domestic violence charge, the latest assault count could be elevated to a Class C felony.
He was still being held Wednesday at the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth.
On April 9, a Hancock County grand jury indicted Hughes on eight counts in connection with a Feb. 9 incident: eluding an officer, criminal operation of a vehicle under the influence, criminal speed, driving to endanger, domestic violence assault, obstructing report of crime or injury, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest.
The charges stem from a police pursuit that involved Ellsworth, Bar Harbor and Mount Desert police officers in the early morning hours of Feb. 9. Hughes, who was wanted for an alleged domestic violence assault, fled by car and later on foot. He was apprehended on Mount Desert Island, according to the Bar Harbor Story.
It was not immediately clear when Hughes was released. In an April 11 Facebook post, Hughes wrote that he has “serious problems” and was in custody getting medical treatment at a Bangor hospital.
Hancock County District Attorney Robert Granger did not immediately respond to inquiries from the Bangor Daily News about Hughes’ release timeline.
Jacob Ferm, the attorney representing Hughes for the grand jury charges, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Bangor Daily News.
