Lucy Liu still gets recognized for her ever-so-brief cameo on Sex and the City.
“It’s so funny because a lot of people have come up to me,” Liu, 57, exclusively told Us Weekly on Thursday, April 9, while discussing her partnership with Pfizer’s “Every Breakthrough Matters” campaign. “I think they didn’t know, like, some people are watching it for the first time.”
Liu played herself in a season 4 episode of Sex and the City, in which she hired Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) as her publicist. Samantha, meanwhile, had initially tried and failed to purchase an Hermès handbag for herself. When her attempts failed, Samantha claimed the purse was actually for Liu.
Instead of delivering the Birkin to Samantha, Hermès handed the bag directly to the actress, who said she only accepted the gift since it was free. Samantha, however, was distraught that her attempts at getting a Birkin failed again and tried literally fighting Liu to get the tote.

“It’s so funny because that’s a time where you know about the Birkin and about Samantha’s character,” Liu recalled to Us. “It’s such a short moment, but apparently it’s very powerful. And it is really about the branding and how exclusive it is to be able to buy the bag. There’s a waitlist, or they choose who they want to wear their things.”
She continued, “Obviously it’s very interesting because it kind of is what I’m working on now for Superfakes about those kind of bags and about the fakes, and about the idea of what brands are and how it can accelerate your own brand in real life, and also, ‘What does it mean?’ and how people are also buying fake items, whether they’re watches or bags … to elevate themselves.”
Liu further acknowledged that “there’s so much potential within that moment” on SATC and how the culture has since “changed.”

The Charlie’s Angels star is currently filming Superfakes, an upcoming Peacock drama series, where she plays a luxury counterfeit dealer entering the dangerous black market world to support her family.
“It’s not just about that lifestyle. It’s about what gets you to that lifestyle and what your idea of that lifestyle is, and what is the struggle behind that to get there?” she told Us. “It’s, like, a smaller story within a bigger idea of what’s going on in the world and I guess, in some ways, the obsession with your own profile and how you present in the world, as opposed to how you really [are].”

In addition to working on Superfakes, Liu has teamed up with Pfizer for its “Every Breakthrough Matters” campaign to raise awareness for early detection cancer screenings.

“Partnering with Pfizer for the screenings is just a reminder of what happened to me and what doesn’t have to happen for other people,” Liu said on Thursday, referring to a previous cancer scare that turned out to be a false diagnosis. “Health is not just about eating healthy and going to the gym. It’s also about screenings and having a regular checkup and also just showing up because we get so busy, but then we don’t advocate for ourselves.”
