Maine has nearly $400 million in unclaimed property — and some of it could be yours.
As of Monday morning, the state treasurer was holding onto about $393 million in money and other financial assets, such as bank accounts, life insurance policies, safe deposit box contents, stocks and dividends, uncashed checks, and unpaid wages.
Under state law, the treasurer’s office holds onto unclaimed property to give its rightful owner the opportunity to reclaim it.
If you think some of that belongs to you, you can go online to maineunclaimedproperty.gov and click “GET STARTED.”
Then enter your first and last names or business name. You can further refine your search by entering a city or town or ZIP code.
You can then search the results, and if you come across something that’s rightfully yours, click “CLAIM” next to the asset to initiate the process to get hold of it.
