I believe Gov. Janet Mills’ negative ad speaks to her membership in the “political class,” not the “institutional gravitas” and “quietly and politely working away” that Adrian Coles, the author of a recent column in the Bangor Daily News, would bestow on her.
Gov. Mills is a scrappy fighter. So is Sen. Susan Collins. But, for good reasons, this Senate race may not be theirs to win. Electability is what we make of it, not what establishment players tell us it should be.
In writing off Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner as “an oyster farmer with a truncated resume of public service,” Cole dismisses Maine heritage industries, American entrepreneurship, and the public service of the United States military. And all the skills such work demands.
Cole begrudges the fact that “Platner is galvanizing voters statewide.” Platner represents the generational change, party reform, and government reform I think Mainers want. And which I believe neither Mills nor Collins can provide.
