Mount Desert Island High School has been placed under lockdown Friday morning while multiple police agencies respond to a false report of an armed man on school property.
Just after 10 a.m. Friday, school superintendent Mike Zboray said the school received a call this morning about a man with an automatic rifle on school grounds, according to the Bar Harbor Story.
The Bar Harbor Police Department said the incident was “most likely” a hoax.
The school remains under lockdown.
The superintendent reported that the call was a hoax and students and staff were safe. He asked that parents do not come to the school and await further instructions. The Bar Harbor Police department requested that the public refrain from calling dispatch.
While law enforcement directed traffic outside the school, a line of cars had assembled on either side of Eagle Lake Road by 11 a.m.
Officers with the Maine Marine Patrol arrived on scene just before 11:30 a.m., joining the Bar Harbor police and fire departments and Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
“I have just been informed that the police will be doing a final sweep around the building to be sure all is safe,” Zboray wrote to parents late Friday morning, according to the Bar Harbor Story.
“This will take about half an hour to complete. At that time, students will be released to their buses and cars to go home. They are doing this out of an abundance of caution to ensure student and staff safety.”
