Teddi Mellencamp paid tribute to her father, John Mellencamp, in an emotional speech as he received the Icon Award at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, 44, presented the honor to the singer, 74, during the Thursday, March 26, awards show at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Teddi acknowledged his music career achievements before becoming emotional as she shared how her dad stepped about amid her cancer battle.
“His plethora of his songs holding a place in the hearts of millions,” she noted. Her voice cracked as she went on, adding, “But for me, ‘Longest Days’ has been the song that means the most.”
“He sings, ‘But nothing lasts forever/ Your best efforts don’t always pay sometimes /When you get sick and you don’t get better/ That’s when life is short, even at its longest days,” Teddi shared.
She continued, “Because it was a little over a year ago when I got sick, my life felt short, even when the days in the hospital seemed to go on forever. Sometimes you get sick and you don’t get better. He wasn’t going to let that lyric define my life. He stepped up, took control, fought for me, and pretty much changed my life, saved my life.”
Concluding her hearfelt speech before John was presented his award, she said, “We’re celebrating the icon, the artist, a man the whole world shows is John Mellencamp, a man I get to call Dad and my best friend.”

John thanked Teddi as he accepted his award and shared what an honor it is to get to share his music with the world.
“I’ve been doing this 50 years and I’ve enjoyed most of it,” he joked. “I want to say that, for all you young people who are starting out, there’s nothing closer to heaven than writing a song or hearing your songs on the radio, or having a show.”
He performed acoustic versions of his hit songs “Jack & Diane” and “Pink Houses” as he took to the stage.

Since its 2018 inception, the Icon Award has celebrated Bon Jovi, Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Pink, Cher and Mariah Carey.
Teddi — whom John shares with ex-wife Victoria Granucci — presenting the accolade to her dad comes amid his support throughout her cancer battle. She initially shared her stage II melanoma diagnosis in October 2022 before revealing in February 2025 that her condition had progressed to stage IV melanoma and metastasized to her lungs and brain.
“He has been beyond,” Teddi said of John during a July 2025 episode of “The Jamie Kern Lima Show” podcast. “The things that I wouldn’t be capable of doing without my dad — not only for financial reasons.”
While Teddi “used to take such pride” in remaining independent, she learned to lean on John amid her illness.

“With all of these medical treatments and everything, he has stepped in. He’s helped me have a nurse,” she explained. “He calls me every single day. He makes sure that I’m OK.”
Teddi noted that she “didn’t expect this at all” from her father.
“He’s giving me advice that, like, I need to hear sometimes,” she continued. “Even the fact that he calls me every single night and it’s not relenting. I may not call him back a couple nights, but he’ll still call every night at the same time.”
In January, John made headlines when he shared an update on Teddi’s illness.
“It’s not f***ing fun,” he said during an appearance on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. “She’s got cancer in the brain, and she’s suffering right now.”

Later that month, John revealed his desire for Teddi to move closer to him as she battled cancer.
“I’m going to go out and see her [in Los Angeles],” he said on the Today show. “I’ve tried to talk her into moving back home. I said, ‘Move back to Indiana, bring the kids and just come back and live in Indiana,’ but she won’t do it.”
Teddi subsequently addressed her father’s remarks, noting on a January episode of her “Two Ts in a Pod” podcast that “so many people” messaged her out of concern for her health. She clarified at the time that she was “mentally and physically struggling,” but her cancer was “not worse.”
“He’s not wrong. I’ve definitely, I mean, I have been suffering,” she acknowledged. “I have been crying a lot. I’ve been super emotional. I’ve even had, like, a support group.”
As for her physical health, Teddi shared in October 2025 that there was “no detectable cancer” when she went for scans, though she was not considered to be in remission. Earlier this month, she revealed she’d been recently hospitalized for Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a skin condition caused by a reaction to medication. Her doctors treated the painful sores all over her body with “injectable steroids and antibiotics.”
