“The Nite Show,” the Maine late-night talk show that ended a 27-year run in 2024, is returning for a one-night live event in Brewer next month to honor local radio legend George Hale.
The 94-year-old Hale was fired this week from the WVOM news talk radio show he had co-hosted with Ric Tyler for more than two decades. During his 77 years in broadcasting, he was the voice of University of Maine sports, called high school games and stock car races, among other assignments.
Hale will be a guest on the live show. Several surprise guests who worked with, and for, him over his long career are also planned.
Danny Cashman, who started “The Nite Show” as a 19-year-old college freshman in Brewer, and hosted the show through its nearly 30-year run, will return to host the one-night event, as will announcer Mark Nason, and Brian Nadeau & The Nite Show Band.
“The Nite Show Live” will follow the format of the televised version of the show with an opening monologue, sketches, guests and music. Additionally, archived footage of Hale’s time at WABI-TV in Bangor will be shown.
“There is a lot of love for George Hale,” Cashman in a news release. “He was on Maine’s first television station the year they signed on the air. Think about that. Since we have had television in Maine, George has been a voice and a presence on television, radio, and for many years, both. People want to hear from him, hear his stories and memories, and the people who have worked with him want to share theirs with him. It’s going to be a special night.”
The live tribute show will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, at the Brewer Community School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $20 and will be available starting at noon this Saturday, March 28, on The Nite Show’s website. The event is a fundraiser for the Brewer Community School’s music and theatre programs.
