Two people were injured when they were hit by a car that lost control on a snowy stretch of Interstate 95 in Veazie on Monday evening.
The crash involved three drivers and started when an 18-year-old Bangor woman driving north near mile marker 189 lost control of her Kia Sorento and went into the median, according to state police.
She got out of the car, and another driver, a 54-year-old man from Medford, stopped to help and joined her behind a guardrail while the man’s wife called 911, police said.
While the two were outside of their vehicles, they were hit by a passing vehicle driven by a 19-year-old Old Town woman.
Both were thrown down an embankment. Police said preliminary information suggests the man may have tried to shield the young woman at the time of the crash.
The 18-year-old sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
The 54-year-old sustained serious injuries and is in critical condition, police said.
The driver of the vehicle that hit them also sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
Police said speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
