CAMDEN, Maine — Megunticook Market and Catering on Gould Street will undergo a “facelift” and offer an expanded selection of goods, including Asian cuisine items, under its new owner.
Tracie Nguyen, who has owned Tropical Salon & Spa in Rockport since 1999, took over ownership of the Camden market on Jan. 22.
“For over 20 years, Megunticook Market and Catering was proudly known as the best market in town — a true neighborhood gem …” Nguyen said on social media. “My heartfelt commitment is to restore this market to the welcoming, community-centered spirit it was known and loved for.”
The new owner, leading a team of more than 25 employees, plans to expand offerings to include Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese foods, including grab-and-go items.
“I would love to add pho Vietnamese broth noodles, banh mi Vietnamese grab-and-go sandwich, egg rolls, fresh spring rolls, sushi and other types of Thai dishes,” Nguyen said.
She also plans to start offering Asian groceries, which she noted are not widely available in the area.
The market will continue to sell the pizza and sandwiches it is known for, and Nguyen even said she plans to lower the prices on those popular items to where they were back when the market was stronger locally two years ago.
“Pizza is a must. We sold over 100 pizzas a day in the off-peak season.”
The market will be closed April 4-11 for renovations.
“We will reset all the shelves and give it a new facelift,” she said. “We will paint the inside of the store a fresh look. We will redo the floor, change all the lights in the store to brighten up the place.”
A grand reopening is planned for May 2.
