Crews from multiple agencies extinguished a structure fire in Otter Creek late Friday night, leading to a power outage and extensive clean-up.
The cause of the fire at 99 Otter Creek Drive is not currently known. No one was injured in the fire. Mount Desert property records indicate the current owner of the wood-shingled ranch is Otta Crik America Trust.
Fire crews were still rolling up hose and working at the site on Saturday morning.
At approximately 10 p.m. Friday, emergency dispatchers learned about the fire and when firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the home fully engulfed. Other agencies were called out shortly thereafter.
Versant Power initiated a power outage in the area to contain potential problems caused by what scanner traffic indicated was a power line sparking near the home.
Mount Desert Fire Department, Bar Harbor Fire Department, Tremont Fire Department, and Bar Harbor and Mount Desert police responded to the fire. Southwest Harbor took care of carbon monoxide alarm calls in Bar Harbor during the event.
An Ellsworth Fire Department crew evacuated two people who were stuck in an elevator at Rodick Lorraine during the power outage, which lasted approximately until 1 a.m.
The fire came the same day that Mount Desert’s new fire engine had broken down during a test drive and driver training in Bar Harbor.
“They were getting in some driving time on the new truck and also some driver training time when it broke down on Ledgelawn,” Mount Desert Town Manager Alex Kimball said. “Because it is still under warranty, the technician came up from Auburn, thus the longer delay before it got fixed. They are working on it now. This is why they like to get new vehicles out for test runs so this happens now rather than during an emergency.”
Although Mount Desert’s new truck is no longer on Ledgelawn Avenue in Bar Harbor, it is unclear if it was back in service in time for the Otter Creek fire.
