DOVER-FOXCROFT — After 75 straight years, the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft has decided to bring its annual summer auction to a close. Club members say the decision comes with mixed feelings including gratitude for the years of success, sadness for the end of this event and excitement for what comes next.
For decades, the auction has been a favorite local tradition. It brought people together, raised money for good causes and helped support programs for kids and families. In recent years the event has brought in less money while costs and planning needs have grown. At the same time club membership has gotten smaller, making it harder to run such a large event.
“We are very proud of the 75 years this auction served our community,” Club President Beth Ruksznis said. “It’s been a great run. Now we’re looking ahead and putting our energy into new projects that will keep helping local families and kids.”
The club is part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide volunteer group focused on improving the lives of children. The Dover-Foxcroft club will continue hosting service projects and local events throughout the year. Club leaders are planning for a significant renewal and update to the Kiwanis Park located adjacent to the Piscataquis Area Community Center.
Community members who want to give back are invited to join the club or volunteer. New members help bring fresh ideas, new energy and more ways to serve the community.
For details about joining or helping out, residents can contact the Kiwanis Club through its web site at www.doverfoxcroftkiwanis.org.
