BANGOR — Does quality sleep feel like a luxury? For individuals who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, getting a healthy amount of sleep may seem more like a fantasy but it’s a basic human need. According to the National Institute for Health, about 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder, with an estimated one-third not getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep nightly.
Mark Szewczyk, MD, otolaryngologist, Northern Light Ear, Nose, and Throat Care, working in conjunction with sleep medicine specialists, can implant a device for patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who struggle to use a continuous positive airway pressure machine.
“When your brain can’t get enough oxygen, the risk of chronic health conditions, including heart attack and stroke and may decrease life expectancy, so it’s vital to treat sleep disorders,” says Dr. Szewczyk. “A CPAP device remains the best treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. When CPAP is not an option, we now offer a surgical device that opens the airway to improve breathing and helps patients get restorative sleep.”
Dr. Szewczyk has been performing this surgical option at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center since 2024 with 32 procedures completed.
