LIMESTONE, Maine — A fire destroyed a Limestone potato house early Wednesday.
Limestone Fire & Rescue received a call at 1:44 a.m. about a potato storage facility ablaze near 302 Main St, fire officials said in a release.
The building had collapsed and was fully engulfed when crews arrived. Two engines, a tanker and eight firefighters battled the blaze until nearly 4 a.m., the department said.
The structure was deemed a total loss, along with a “small amount” of potatoes, according to the release. Because the fire was unattended, the state fire marshal’s office was notified.
“Some smoke and or fire may still be visible, but is safely contained within the foundation. No reason to be alarmed,” the department stated on social media.
As of midmorning on Wednesday, plumes of smoke could be seen rolling out of the rubble. All that remained was the foundation.
Investigators with the Office of State Fire Marshal were at the scene and had taped off the structure.
No further information is available because of the ongoing probe, investigators said.
