I believe that Rep. Jared Golden’s vote against an immediate stoppage of the war with Iran is appropriate. The sad fact is that Congress, at this time, cannot stop the president; and even if the U.S. Senate were to pass similar legislation as the House, the president would still have the “supposed” authority to continue the action for 60 days, or he could simply veto the bill.
The reality is that the Supreme Court would have to jump in and decide who is correct. That takes time.
I also heartily agree that once you start an action like this, be it a good or a bad idea, you are now in a position that you must make sure that the enemy will not come back at you in the near future. A stop too soon would be ill advised since it would likely result in the deaths of many more soldiers and sailors if you left the foe with sufficient firepower to come back at you.
Therefore, as also proposed by Golden, I think that the 30-day extension would be adequate time to complete military action and sufficiently cripple the enemy and save lives. We are more than halfway through that timeline already.
